How My Dog and P90X Changed My Life (Mark’s Story)

This is the story of how P90X and my dog changed my life forever.

P90XA little over 18 months ago my wife and I began our fitness journey with P90X. I had heard of P90X from many friends and so I decided to finally give it a shot, and my wife decided to join me.

In the beginning of my P90X journey I did what most people do when they start off with P90X. I started working out with the program but paid very little attention to the nutrition side of the program. Now, granted, my goals were much different than the typical P90X-er. My goal was to add muscle mass and increase my weight NOT lose weight. So I literally ate everything in site. I didn’t pay attention to fat content, ingredients, or anything else that the nutrition guide tells you to look at. The only thing I paid attention to was my protein intake and the number of calories I was eating (but I didn’t care where those calories came from).

After my first round of 90 days I was hooked. I was pleased with the results (packed on 15lbs of muscle) and everyone was noticing that I was in better shape. But I still didn’t pay that close of attention to my nutrition.

Then, in February of 2010, we noticed 2 lumps on our dog Alli. One on her hind leg and one near her tail. The one near her tail was bleeding and oozing because she was constantly licking at it. So we decided to take her to the vet because I didn’t want her bleeding all over the place.

After the vet examined her and took some samples from the lumps she came back and told me that Alli had mast cell tumors and that they were cancerous. I was pretty bummed. Even though I never wanted a dog, Alli had grown on me and I didn’t want to see her go that way.

AlliSo we decided to get the tumors removed. They vet told us that there was greater than a 50% chance they could come back because we didn’t do radiation but we weren’t going to put her through that.

In June 2010 we went on a family vacation to Florida to visit family members in West Palm Beach. Alli stayed with my parents and when we arrived home we noticed that she was licking in the same spot where the tumor near her tail had been. Sure enough, it was back. But this time, instead of going to the vet to have it removed again, my wife decided to research holistic treatments for cancer. That was the best decision we’ve ever made.

We started feeding our dog REAL food including chicken breasts, brown rice, mushrooms, garlic and even giving her green tea in the morning. Within a month the tumor was completely GONE! I couldn’t believe it.

It was at that point that I really started to research how nutrition impacted our own lives. I mean, if proper nutrition could cure my dog of a tumor, what could it do for us?

So, a few documentaries later, a few books later and a TON of research later, I was officially a “believer”. We have since completely changed our eating habits. We have cut down immensely on the number of processed foods that we buy. We are constantly reading labels and trying to avoid things like high fructose corn syrup. And we are using the doctor’s office as a “last option” when we feel sick.

One of the best things that happened to us during our research was the strengthening of our belief in Shakeology. I never really knew what all of those vitamins, minerals, herbs, fruits and vegetables were doing for me. I just knew I liked how I felt on the days I took it as opposed to the days I didn’t. The list of ingredients found in Shakeology really is top notch and in order to get all of those ingredients into my diet it would cost me MUCH more than $3/day. So if you’re serious about improving your overall health, do yourself a favor, and check out the info about Shakeology, specifically the ingredient list.

There is a lot of power in the foods that we eat and I truly believe that there are many cures to many of the ailments that we as a society face today including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. If we would only stop taking the easy way out, get rid of the mentality that there is a “pill for every ill” and, as Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food”.
