Should you just call it a day? Should you eat? What should you do?
Protein Shake or Recovery Drink After P90X?
This is a big question that people have. Often times when I ask people what they use to help their muscles recover immediately after their workout they respond with, “a whey protein shake.” Now, while there are MANY things that you could put into your body right after your workout that would be much worse for you, a protein shake is not the ideal thing to use.
You Need Carbs Immediately after Working Out
The ideal post-workout supplement to use is some sort of recovery drink. Something with… *gasp*… carbs. Now, I know a lot of people have the misconception that carbohydrates are bad for you but the truth is that they serve a very specific purpose and should be consumed at specific times.
P90X Results and Recovery Formula is a four-parts-carbohydrates-to-one-part-protein powder that speeds muscle recovery and maximizes the absorption of nutrients. When you exercise with weights, or do High Intensity Interval Training, you burn blood sugar and glycogen. If you give it your all for about an hour, you’ll probably deplete both of those resources. The carbs in Recovery Formula rush in to replenish that blood sugar and glycogen. Meanwhile, the protein piggybacks in, getting to muscles for a head start on resynthesis.
What Should I do if I don’t Have the Recovery Drink?
There are many different ways that you can get the ideal ratio of carbs to protein in a recovery drink. I have used chocolate milk (with skim milk) or even a vanilla whey protein drink mixed with a fruit juice like apple or grape (orange is too acidic) as a post-workout drink before. While these are good options to help recovery, in my opinion, the P90X Recovery drink is the best on the market. Not only does it taste great but it is a complete package. I don’t have to worry about measuring things out to make sure I get the right ratios and I don’t miss out on all the extra goodies that they pack in there like riboflavin to help reduce soreness and creatine to replace the creatine that I lose in my workout. I also get a little arginine and glutamine to help rebuild my muscles.
In my opinion, Beachbody has created the wheel of fitness and nutrition. If you want results all you have to do is show up, push play and listen to the advice of the nutrition experts like Steve Edwards.
