The Dirty Dozen Foods: What Are They??

It seems that more and more people are becoming concerned with the food that they put in their bodies. Should I buy organic? Should I not? What are these “dirty dozen foods” and why should I buy them organic? Which foods are safe to buy non-organic? These are just a few of the questions that people who are becoming health conscience start to ask themselves. In this post, we’re going to talk about the dirty dozen foods. What they are… and why you should buy them organic.

What Are The Dirty Dozen Foods?

Ahhh… the “dirty dozen foods“. You may have come across an image on Facebook about the dirty dozen foods… or maybe you saw something on Instagram or Twitter. None the less, you’re trying to figure out, what are these dirty dozen foods… and why are they considered “dirty”?

To put it simply, “dirty” foods has nothing to do with the amount of actual dirt that is on a fruit or vegetable. What it has to do with is the amount of pesticides that are used on that particular fruit or vegetable during the time that it is being grown and shipped to a local grocery store. Fruits and vegetables that are exposed to pesticides are also known as “conventionally grown”. Now don’t get me wrong, having a diet rich in conventionally grown fruits and vegetables is much better than not eating fruits and vegetables at all but most experts would agree that limiting your exposure to pesticides is in your best interest.

So now you know what is considered a dirty food. But what exactly are the dirty dozen foods? Below is a list of of what are considered “the dirty dozen foods”.

How Are The Dirty Dozen Determined?

There are many great websites out there with regards to health and nutrition information. One that I have found, and have learned a lot from is Recently they linked to a website called On EWG’s website, they explained in further detail the methodology that they used to determine the dirty dozen foods. Here’s an excerpt:

Contamination was measured in six different ways:
  • Percent of samples tested with detectable pesticides
  • Percent of samples with two or more detectable pesticides
  • Average number of pesticides found on a single sample
  • Average amount (in parts per million) of all pesticides found
  • Maximum number of pesticides found on a single sample
  • Total number of pesticides found on the commodity

What Foods Can I Buy Non-Organic?

So now that you know which foods you should definitely buy organic, I’m sure you’re wondering which foods are okay to buy non-organic. Well don’t worry, we’re going to fill you in on that too! Below is a list of foods that are safe to buy non-organic.
